Elliot Cleans Up for Autism

Posted on 25th September 2018

When Elliot Melrose started washing cars in his drive in Thornton Cleveleys he had no idea his venture would go viral ...

Elliot, who has autism, set up a car wash during half term in February as something to keep himself occupied while off school and it has been a runaway success ever since.

Steve Melrose, Elliot's dad said:

“He is quite famous locally now for washing cars. He only did it initially during the half term as something to do but it has been unbelievable how popular it has become.”

Elliot (14) attends Great Arley school in Thornton and Steve says his son finds it hard to make friends –but the car wash helps his confidence. He added:

“Not only is he learning about finances and controlling his money it is helping with his confidence which he has suffered with previously. We have had some people complaining saying he should have a licence and that sort of thing which has upset Elliot, but Wyre Council has been very supportive of him and his ideas.”

It was in June that Elliot's venture really took off though when George Sanderson was driving down Stanah Road and spotted the teenager hard at work.  Mr. Sanderson stopped to find out more and following a car wash posted the following on Facebook with a request for people to share:

"This young man called Elliot has used his own initiative and set up a small car wash business from his house, I happened to be driving past and it caught my eye. He's gone to the trouble of setting signs up, making artwork and placing England flags outside his mum and dad's property. After speaking to his father it turns out he has autism, this is something he does that helps him manage it. His father told me he doesn't have a lot of friends and this keeps him busy at the weekends when everyone is playing out.
This has to be one of the nicest, most positive and motivated young men I've ever met. It would be great to see more individuals his age doing stuff like this. Please if anyone is wanting to have their vehicle washed today, please take the time and come to this young man's business. It's on stanah road, Thornton.
Please like and share this post guys"

The response to the Facebook post was outstanding and Elliot has received both press coverage and business due to Mr. Sanderson's support.  Elliot is keen to make sure that other people benefit from his enterprise and as well as organising community events like litter picking he is now collecting tips to support other autistic people.

Ed Green Community Fundraiser from Autism Initiatives said:

"We are delighted that Elliot has chosen to support Autism Initiatives.  He is a truly inspirational and entrepreneurial person and every penny raised will be used to help other autistic people locally."
