Karl runs half marathon for Autism

Posted on 24th September 2020

Karl Hamel from Azure Insurance Risk Solutions took on the Chester half marathon virtually to raise funds for Autism Initiatives

Karl completed The Virtual Chester Half Marathon on Sunday the 20th September to raise vital funds for local autism projects.

This was Karl's first half marathon and he was meant to take on this challenge on the 17th May, but due to the Covid - 19 pandemic the physical event in Chester was cancelled.

This did not discourage Karl from completing his challenge, and so four months on he strapped on his running shoes and completed the marathon distance - Well Done Karl!

Karl, a member of BNI Lima, said:

"In truth, I chose to run a half marathon first and then chose a charity later. This was the longest run I’ve undertaken and thought by using a training plan it would be relatively straightforward. Oops!!
As I have a relative with autism and Ed and I have gotten to know each other as time has gone on, it was easy to choose Autism Initiatives because of the great work they do."

Ed Green our community fundraiser at Autism Initiatives and fellow member of BNI Lima went to meet Karl on the day to cheer him along and thank him for the amazing work he has done:

“Karl took on this Chester Half Marathon challenge and smashed it! Well done Karl! Not only running his first half marathon in only 2 hours he also raised an amazing £410 for Autism Initiatives! Taking on a running challenge virtually can be more challenging because you don’t have the support of the other runners and the sense of occasion. It was great to see members of Karl’s running club running alongside him for part of the way on Sunday to give him some fabulous moral support. We need more virtual challenge runners to raise funds for Autism Initiatives, please get in touch if you would like a fundraising pack.”

Thanks again to Karl for taking on the Chester Half Marathon for Autism Initiatives and raising an amazing £430 so far!
