A Royal Thank You to Carers in the Scottish Borders

Posted on 10th May 2023

May Lowrie and Patrick Cunningham McLeish from Autism Initiatives Longnewton services had a brush with royalty attending the Thank You to Carers event in the Scottish Borders.

The event, which took place on 12th April at Kelso Racecourse, was organised by Scottish Borders Council as a Thank You to all the carers for their dedication and amazing work throughout lockdown.

May and Patrick met Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, who is President of the Carers Trust and known for her work supporting a number of care charities. The event was also attended by Council Convener, Cllr Watson McAteer and Council Leader, Cllr Euan Jardine.

There were around 150 carers from across the Scottish Borders in attendance. The attendees enjoyed afternoon tea and then went to the Buccleuch Cup Race Day afterwards.

May and Patrick were nominated by their colleagues to attend as there were just two spaces available for each organisation.

May Lowrie, who is a Support Worker at Autism Initiatives said: “The event at the races went well, and we both really enjoyed it. We were both presented to Princess Anne and spoke to her. She asked us about the organisation, about our roles at Autism Initiatives and about things that the people who use the residential service enjoy doing with the team, like swimming and going out to the cafe”.

We're looking for more great people to join our teams in Scotland. If you're looking for a rewarding role check out our vacancies ...
