After more than 20 years of service in a wide variety of roles, Brian Williams has stepped down as Chair of Trustees at Autism Initiatives. The transition marks the end of an era shaped by Brian’s unwavering commitment, warmth and leadership.

When Brian first took on a role of Trustee, he brought a wealth of expertise with him. As a former social worker and CEO of an adoption agency, Brian was equipped with the knowledge and insight to later take on the role of Chair of the Board.

As the parent of an autistic son, Brian’s personal connection and deep understanding of autism has helped to guide Autism Initiatives to its success today.

Watching the charity grow

Over the years, Brian has supported Autism Initiatives’ significant growth, while staying true to its purpose. While exploring new opportunities, the focus has always been on sustainable growth and doing what’s right for the people we support.

One key milestone during Brian’s time as Chair was securing the right setting for a new Peterhouse School site. The decision was made to ensure the charity could continue meeting needs for decades to come.

Brian also shared that he’s especially proud of how the support Autism Initiatives provides has evolved.

“I’ve been so impressed by how services have become more positive and person-centred,” he says. “There’s been real progress in adapting support to help people live fuller lives. The staff are incredible. When you hear what they do, and the difference they make, it’s amazing.”

Brian’s legacy and looking ahead

Brian officially handed over the role of Chair to Marie Cooil at the Board’s November meeting, ensuring a smooth transition. While he will remain involved with the wider Autism Initiatives Group Board for a while longer, he plans to fully step back from trustee duties later this year.

Reflecting on his time with Autism Initiatives, Brian is filled with gratitude and expressed his appreciation for CEO Andy Grainger.

“I felt I was a critical friend and partner for Andy to work alongside. Andy is very efficient in running the charity and it’s been a very pleasant experience as Chair.”

Brian added:

“I’ve met some amazing people. When I see what’s been possible for my son, it means everything. And I know so many other families feel the same.”

Andy Grainger, CEO at Autism Initiatives said:

On behalf of everyone at Autism Initiatives, I would like to express enormous thanks and gratitude to Brian, for all his help, guidance and advice over the years, helping make Autism Initiatives the success it is today. Brian is a very well thought of and respected member of the team who has helped us all enormously.”
