There’s nothing quite like a night out with Barry spinning the tunes!

Barry, who uses our services in Newcastle, Northern Ireland, has launched his own autism-friendly disco night – “Barry’s Beats”. The event is held monthly at Newcastle Community Cinema and draws in crowds from far and wide.

Barry Smyth’s journey from music lover to becoming a DJ has not only transformed his life but also made a significant impact on many others.

Autism-friendly events were few and far between in County Down. However, Barry’s Beats events have drawn in a diverse crowd from the ages of 18 right up to 80, with older attendees often being the first to hit the dance floor and the last to leave!

Barry is 38 and resides in Autism Initiatives’ Supported Living, where the team has played a crucial role in his journey to becoming a DJ.

Caroline McClellan, who is a Service Manager at Autism Initiatives Northern Ireland, and has known Barry for 11 years, said that Barry has always been passionate about music and has spoken about wanting to be a DJ. Autism Initiatives sent Barry on a course to help him achieve this dream.

Caroline said:

“I’m so proud of Barry and everything he’s achieved. It’s been a privilege working alongside him to achieve his dream. The events have really helped to develop Barry’s confidence and his sense of helping others. It’s lovely to see how people are so happy to be here and watching friendships evolve”

Caroline added:

“He has all the gear and has grown so much in confidence. It’s great to see how he has come out of his shell.”

Barry launched the disco events in 2018. After having to pause them over lockdown, they restarted in January 2025 and were bigger and better than ever.

Barry’s passion for music and entertainment brings immense joy to him and everyone who attends, creating a safe and neurodivergent-friendly space.

“The discos are a safe space where people can sit and watch what’s happening, or hit the dancefloor, there’s no pressure, people can do what they want and on their own terms”

With a wide variety of music and an extensive list of song requests most nights, he loves spinning tracks that get everyone on the dancefloor!

Ready to get your groove on? “Barry’s Beats” happens on the last Tuesday of each month from 7-9 pm at Newcastle Community Cinema. Admission is just £3, and carers get in free. Anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to join the fun.
